Trust Us. You need travel insurance! Here is our story why…
Nobody ever wants or expects an injury or accident to happen while traveling. But, the truth of the matter is — it does happen. Even though it’s unlikely that anything bad or scary will occur while traveling abroad, sometimes things don’t go as planned. I know first hand.
My World Nomads travel insurance story begins (and ends) in Hoi An, Vietnam. After arriving in the beautiful city with my husband, we immediately fell in love. The city was gorgeous, the food was insanely delicious, and our Airbnb hosts we were staying with were so nice and hospitable. In fact, it’s their hospitality that got me in a bit of trouble.
Before leaving on our year and a half journey abroad, we purchased World Nomads travel insurance. At first, we tossed around the idea of even purchasing it at all, but after reading countless travel blogs, we decided it’d be dumb not to. Within a couple minutes of applying for coverage, we had it. It was super easy. I am so glad we did.
During our stay in Hoi An, we met some lovely people. Some were locals and some were other backpackers staying in the guest house with us. Every evening, everyone in the house would come together for dinner and drinks. And by drinks, I mean the rice wine made by the neighbor across the street. Yeah, not the best idea. But, when in Rome!
After an evening of eating delicious, local food and numerous chants of “Mot! Hai! Ba! Yo!” (which is 1, 2, 3, drink! in Vietnamese), it was time that I called it a night. Making my way up the tile stairs of the guest house, I made my way to bed. Well, I tried anyway. The rice wine had cruelly taken a hold of my ability to walk like a normal, sober person; I lost my footing and fell down. Face first. On the tile floor.
My clumsy, fall to my face wasn’t graceful by any means. In fact, my teeth had apparently decided to take the brunt of the impact. Yep, three of my front teeth were totally shattered. And yes, I immediately went into freak out mode. I was Hoi An, Vietnam! It’s a small city with not too many people speaking English. What the hell was I going to do?
Thankfully, our wonderful and amazing Airbnb host (who is now a dear friend) was Vietnamese and had grown up in the area. She took me to her dentist who didn’t speak any English. I was terrified, to say the least. He informed me, well, he told my friend, who then told me — I would need three root canals and three crowns. Oh, good. That sounds fun.
Given the fact that I’m fairly vain, and I definitely wasn’t going to let this ruin our travels, I went ahead with the procedures. The total cost would be the equivalent of just $600 USD. In American prices, that’s a stupid good deal. Plus, I knew that I had my World Nomads coverage to pay for it.
It wasn’t my best day, let’s put it that way. Not to mention I was mortified that this happened around my new friends, but now, my face was being drilled into and I was going to have three new teeth. Anxious is an understatement.
After all was said and done, I had to pay the dentist up front — in cash. I was nervous to see how the insurance claim would end up playing out. I had a very unofficial receipt from the dentist, some pictures of my teeth before and after, and proof that we took money out of the ATM. That’s it.
I was fully expecting World Nomads to be a total pain in the ass. There was no way it would be easy with such a lack of documentation. But I was in Hoi An, what was I supposed to do? That was my only option at the time. Thankfully, it was incredibly easy.
I submitted all of the documentation I had, along with a description of the claim, through the World Nomads website. Within a couple days, a representative got back to me and wanted to confirm a few details. After that, it was all taken care of!
Within two and a half weeks of the “incident,” World Nomads fully reimbursed me for all of the dental costs. They sent a check directly to our home address and we had family make the deposit for us. It was really amazing how quickly they helped us move through the process.
Needless to say, the second that I knew I was hurt, I was so glad that we decided to purchase travel insurance. Even though the injuries could have been worse, and so could have the costs, World Nomads handled it professionally and in a really impressive time-frame.
There’s no question that we’ll be traveling with World Nomads travel insurance every single time we go on a trip. It’s so affordable and it provides peace of mind which is something you want to have while you’re abroad.
